Mr. Raymond E. "Ed" Smith, age 93, of Taylorville, formerly of Tovey died at 4:05 a.m. Thursday January 13, 2011 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital in Taylorville.

Ed was born June 2, 1917 in Tovey, the son of Herman W. and Jessie Sterner Smith. He was retired from Caterpillar in Decatur. After his retirement from Caterpillar he worked at S & L Variety and Hardware Store in Kincaid for several years. He had been a member of Tovey United Methodist Church at Tovey. He was a member of American Legion Post 905 in Kincaid. He served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by a brother, Richard (wife Frances) Smith of Witt, IL; several nieces and nephews, including Sharon (husband Larry) Mense of Taylorville, with whom he made his home for the last several years, and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Orville Smith, Clifford Smith and Robert Smith, and sisters, Miriam "Sis" Hunt, Lillian Smith and Pearl Smith.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 17, 2011 in Masterson Funeral Home at Kincaid. Pastor Linda Vonck officiated and burial followed in Bethany Cemetery, North of Tovey. Military graveside rights were conducted at the cemetery.

Pallbearers were Brett Mense, Brett Ryan Mense, Kyle Mense, Dean Moore, Donnie Moore and David Moore.

Visitation was held for one hour prior to the funeral.
