Mr. Nelson George “Butch” Hundley Jr., 76, of Palmyra, passed peacefully from this earth on Saturday, June 8th, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Nelson was born in Litchfield, IL on Friday, February 13, 1948, the son of Nelson G. Hundley Sr. and Mildred (Bruce) Hundley.
Nelson married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Gudgel on October 10, 1970, in Tovey, Illinois.
SSG Hundley honorably served his country for 25 years. He enlisted in the United States Navy for 14 years during which he completed 3 tours in Vietnam. He then transferred and retired from the Illinois Army National Guard where he was part of the 3637th Maintenance Company at Camp Lincoln, Springfield, Illinois. Nelson then retired from the Illinois Department of Revenue in Springfield, Illinois after 20 years of service.
Mr. Hundley enjoyed riding his Harley, everything guns and ammo, deer hunting, and traveling on Cruise ships. He enjoyed his ‘Wednesday Men’s-day’ where he would spend time with his veteran friends. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Nelson and Mildred Hundley, sisters Martha Sauer and Mildred Hundley, and a grandson Joseph “Joey” Fairbrother.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Mary of Palmyra, IL, a daughter Amy (Michael) Masterson of Tovey, IL, a son Nelson (Jeannie) Hundley of Tovey, IL, and a daughter Mary Bost of Kincaid, IL, Grandchildren Gary (Sara) Fairbrother of Quincy, IL, Heaven Miller of Taylorville, IL, Lorin Fairbrother of Peoria, IL, Alison Riva of Tovey, IL, Breece and Ayla Hughes of Tovey, IL, Great-grandchildren Addrielle, Lucian, and Percy of Taylorville, IL, a brother Bruce Hundley of Carlinville, IL, his two fur babies Dutch and Bella, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Masterson Funeral Home in Kincaid, IL. Rev. Russ Burch will officiate. Burial with full military honors will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Taylorville, IL. Visitation for Mr. Nelson G. Hundley, Jr will be held for 2 hours (11 am to 1 pm) before his service Thursday at Masterson’s.
