Mr. Roger Smith Obituary

Mr. Roger E. Smith, 74, of Decatur, IL formerly of Tovey, IL passed from this life at 11:34 a.m. Sunday May 15, 2022 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Jacksonville, IL December 18, 1947 the son of Edd and Maggie (Batey) Smith.

Roger graduated from Ashland High School in the Class of 1966. He soon enlisted in the U. S. Navy serving honorably during the Viet-Nam War.

Mr. Smith married Mary Lou Dean in 1971 in Jacksonville, IL.  They have enjoyed over 50 years together.

Mr. Smith previously worked as Kincaid Chief of Police, he also worked at Peabody Mine #10 near Pawnee, IL.  Roger also drove a truck for Heartland Express until he retired for good in 2008.

He was a member of Midland United Methodist Church, former Commander of American Legion Post #905 both in Kincaid, IL and a member of the U.M.W.A.  He enjoyed the work he did at the Legion, helping at the Midland United Methodist Food Pantry, playing cards, coffee with friends, the Chicago Cubs, along with spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.   

Surviving are his wife Mary, a daughter Blaine DeAnn Smith both of Decatur, IL 2 sons James A. Smith of Moweaqua, IL and Michael G. (wife Patricia) Smith of Taylorville, IL a daughter-in-law Elizabeth McLeod-Smith of Assumption, IL., 8 grandchildren Jordon Anderson, Chandler Smith, Evan Smith, Connor Smith, Kaitlyn Smith, Regan Anderson, Laela Smith and Logan Smith 2 great-grandchildren Johanna Gansbauer and Brantly Miller, 1 sister Betty Patterson of Sacramento, CA., along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and 4 sisters Sylvan “Eddy” Roy, Lillian Sewell, Christine Gunderson, and Lovern Petty.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at Midland United Methodist Church in Kincaid, IL., ending with Military Honors.  Pastor Randy Burwell will officiate.  Visitation for Mr. Roger E. Smith will be held for an hour before his services (10am to 11am) at the church.  Interment will take place at a later date.   Masterson Funeral Home in Kincaid is assisting with arrangements.
