Mr. Jesse "Larry" Smothers, 100, of Taylorville, IL formerly of Kincaid and Bulpitt, IL passed away at 4:43 a.m. Sunday, August 16, 2015 at Gowin Parc in Taylorville, IL.

He was born in Logan, IL on September 2, 1914 the son of William Miles and Bertha (Moore) Smothers. Larry married Edith M. Griffiths on December 11, 1933 in Taylorville, IL. Edith preceded him in death on September 6, 2012.

Mr. Smothers was a member of Kincaid Church of God. He is a retired coal miner working for 41 years in area coal mines. Larry was also a member of United Mine Workers of America local 9819.

He is survived by his children Richard Smothers of Springfield, IL Gary (Gigi) Smothers of Taylorville, IL Mrs. Faye (Danny) Hay of Chatham, IL Ms. Beverly Wiggs of Mascoutah, IL ; Brothers: Delmas (Jean) Smothers, Greenfield, IN; Jack (Thelma) Smothers, Logan, IL: Sister: Anne Wilson, Benton, IL. Grandchildren: Mike Smothers, Mt. Zion, IL; Debra (Joe) Champley, Taylorville, IL; David (Jane) Hay, Chatham, IL; Greg (Janet) Hay, Quincy, IL; Regina (Lee) Peterson, Mascoutah, IL' Kenneth Wiggs, Republic, MO: Kevin (Janette) Wiggs, Belleville, IL; Bill (Becky) Wiggs, Herrin, IL. 17 great-grandchildren, 7 great great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Edith, grandson Mark Hay great-granddaughter Jessica Hay, 3 brothers Artie, Joe and Everett Smothers and 5 sisters Vivian Smothers, Alma McCormick, Lola McCormick, Lillian Willet, Mary Laneve; and daughter-in-law Joyce Smothers.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at the Kincaid Church of God. Rev. Jacob Skelton will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, Taylorville, IL. Visitation will be held for one hour before the services at the church. Masterson Funeral Home in Kincaid, IL is assisting the family with arrangements.
