Genevieve (Schmelzer) Cushing

Mrs. Genevieve “Gen Bird” Cushing, 91 of Kincaid Illinois passed at 6:32 AM March 12, 2025. She was born March 7, 1934 the daughter of Rudolph, “Snooks” and Lillian (McQuade) Schmelzer. Gen married Donald “Dink” Cushing on September 12, 1954 in Kincaid and he proceeded her in death on June 27, 1992. She was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kincaid. Dink and Gen owned and operated Cushing Hardware Store in Kincaid for many years. After the passing of her husband, Gen started working at the Medicine Shoppe in Taylorville. While working there she gained many lifetime friends. One thing that she loved most of all was her family. She always looked forward to hosting the Christmas cookie parties each year with all the women in her family. Gen was definitely a true Cub fan where her and her friends attended many Cub games over the years. Anybody that knew her, knew the love she had for her boxer dogs. You knew if you received a card from her for any occasion you definitely was getting a picture of her dog inside.

Surviving Gen are 3 nieces, one nephew, along with several great and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister(best friend) and one nephew.

Per family’s wishes, private services were held at Masterson‘s in Kincaid Illinois. She was laid to rest with Dink March 14, 2025 at old Stonington Cemetery. Pallbearers were Timmy Binegar, Bob Kirchhoff, William Kirchhoff, Vincent Pop, Joseph Pop, and Ron Smothers.
