Charles R. Pinnell

Mr. Charles R. Pinnell, 89, of Kincaid, IL believed to be the last surviving resident, raised in Christian County, present at the attack on Pearl Harbor, passed away at 6:38 pm Wednesday, August 1, 2012 in Taylorville Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Pinnell was born in Eldorado, IL July 24, 1923 the son of James Earl & Emma Louise (Stanley) Pinnell, Sr. He married Mary C. Corso on May 19, 1945 in Taylorville, IL.

Charlie was serving in the US Navy based on the USS Maryland during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a devoted member of the Kincaid Church of God. Mr. Pinnell worked 40 years at Peabody, Monterey and Freeman Coal Mines retiring in 1986. Charles also was a member of the Taylorville American Legion Post # 73, AMVETS, and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. He served as Grand Marshal of the Kincaid Labor Day Parade in 1998 and had previously been Grand Marshal of Taylorville's 4th of July Parade. He had been active in the U.M.W.A.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years Mary Pinnell of Taylorville, IL., 3 daughters Andrea and her husband Paul Swiney of Taylorville, IL Cheryl and husband Rex Jesse and Patty and husband James Tolly all of Moweaqua, IL 2 sons Mr. Roy J. Pinnell of Taylorville, IL and Joseph and wife Esther Pinnell of Phoenix, AZ along with 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son David, a grandson Grant Tolly, a sister Alma Warner, 2 brothers James Pinnell, Jr. and Thomas Pinnell and a daughter in law Jeannie Pinnell.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Sunday, August 5, 2012 in the Kincaid Church of God. Pastor Michael Mayberry officiated. Visitation was held for 1 hour before the service at the church. Burial was in Bethany Cemetery, North of Tovey, IL. Memorials may be made to Taylorville V.F.W. 515 West Ave, Taylorville, IL 62568 or Taylorville American Legion Post #73 110 W.
