Mrs. Kathryn Westlake, 93, of Arthur, IL formerly of Tovey, IL was called home to her Lord at 6:35 A.M. Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Arthur Home, Arthur, IL.

She was born in West Frankfort, IL December 6, 1923 the daughter of Lawrence and Pearl (Sherwood) Shackelford.  Kathryn married Orville O. Westlake, DVM on April 27, 1946 at the First Christian Church in West Frankfort, IL.  Orville preceded her in death March 20, 2009.

Kathryn graduated from West Frankfort High School.  Her further education included the Professional Nursing Program at the University of Michigan, and a B.S. Degree in Nursing at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL.  She then earned her Master’s Degree in Nursing from Emory University in Atlanta, GA. 

Mrs. Westlake’s employment included Director of Nursing at Carle Hospital, Urbana, IL; Director of Nursing at Union Hospital in West Frankfort, IL.  She taught Vocational Nursing at S.I.U. Carbondale, IL and later taught in the 4 year Professional Nursing Program at Spalding College, Louisville, KY.

For 20 years she played piano and organ at Tovey United Methodist Church.  At the time of her death she was a member of First United Methodist Church in Taylorville, IL.  Mrs. Westlake served as a Lay Speaker for the Methodist Church’s for 23 years.  She was active in the Gideon’s International from 1985 to the present. 

Surviving are her daughter Mary Kathryn (Nicholas) Astone of Panama City, FL., 2 grandchildren Carolyn (Scott) Phillips of Havelock, NC., Joseph Astone of Chicago, IL a brother Dr. William H. Shackelford of Cerro Gordo, IL., 5 great grandchildren Elissa Phillips, Nicole Phillips, Robert Scott Phillips, Jr., Alec Phillips and Mason Phillips all of Havelock, NC along with other relatives and a great many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Walnut St., Taylorville, IL 62568.    Visitation for Mrs. Katheryn Westlake will be held for one hour before her service at the church.  Masterson Funeral Home in Kincaid is assisting the family with arrangements.  www.mastersonfh.com
